Hillard R ‘Hoff’ Hoffman, 89, of State College, passed away peacefully Friday February 21 2025, surrounded by his loving family at home.


Born in Wikes-Barre, he was the son of the late Hillard and Genevieve ‘Jean’ (McLaughlin) Hoffman.


He earned a BS in Secondary Education with Certification in Mathematics, History and English from Wilkes University, 1958, a MS Degree in Educational, Administration & Supervision with Secondary Principal Certification, from Bucknell University 1959, D.Ed. in Higher Education Administration, Institutional Research & Applied Statistics, from Pennsylvania State University, 1969.

 

He also served his country proudly in the US Air Force.

 

A career in education started and continued throughout his life as a Mathematics Teacher, Coughlin High School (1958-1963), Asst. Director, Experimental Teacher Education Project, Marshall University (1963-1966), Supervisor, Higher Education Statistics, PA Dept. of Education (1966-1970), Director, Institutional Research, State University College at Buffalo (1970-1975), Director, Data Research Center, University of Maryland (1975-1979), Director, Bureau of Statistics, Research & Planning, PA Dept of Commerce (1981-1983), Assoc. Vice President for Academic Affairs & Planning, University of Alaska (1979-1985), Owner, Score More Test Prep Centers (1982-2005) and as a Professor, Statistics, Pennsylvania State University (1992-2002).

 

He enjoyed Penn State University and was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying football, wrestling, the NY Yankees, and loved traveling the world with his family.

 

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Deborah Hoffman, children, Kenneth Hoffman (Lori), Michael Hoffman (Carolyn), Eric Hoffman, Jean Moriarta (Michael), stepchildren, Michele Gilbert (Joe) Nathan Miller (Carrie) and Allyson Miller, 14 Grandchildren and  2 Great Grandchildren.

 

Many of Hoff’s friends/family would say that he played an important and transcending role in their lives, offering invaluable guidance and wisdom while creating friendships to last a lifetime.

 

All friends and family are invited to gather at the University Wine Company, 540 Misty Hill Drive,

State College, PA 16801,  on Saturday, March 1 2025 from 11:00AM – 3:00PM.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to 365 Hospice, 1315 W College Avenue
